Forum Young Professionals working in South Africa

September, 2006 - Three young lawyers - Omo Akintan, Margaret Mary Flynn, and Meghan McDermott - have begun six-month internships in South Africa with the Forum of Federations, where they are doing development-assistance work.

The women are in South Africa under a Forum internship program funded by the Canadian International Development Agency.

Ms Akintan is working as a legal assistant and policy analyst at the Community Law Centre under the direction of Prof. Nico Steytler at the University of the Western Cape in Cape Town. She holds a law degree from the University of Toronto. Ms Akintan worked as a legal intern at the BAOBAB For Women's Human Rights in Lagos, Nigeria. She also did an internship with Amnesty International in Toronto.

Ms Mary Flynn is a policy analyst at the Centre for Land-related, Regional and Development Policy in Pretoria under the supervision of Prof. Nic Ollivier. She graduated in law from the University of Toronto. Ms Flynn articled with the Ontario Human Rights Commission. She also worked with the International Human Rights Clinic, where she did work in Belize.

Ms McDermott is also with the Community Law Centre as a research intern on intergovernmental relations and local government. She has an law degree from the University of Victoria. Ms McDermott has also worked as a policy analyst for the Ministry of the Environment of the Province of British Columbia.

Last year, Forum intern Coel Kirkby, also worked with the Community Law Centre in Cape Town. His tasks there included training many newly-elected local city council members. The Centre has been crucial in helping South Africans implement democracy in the cities and towns in a nation which became a parliamentary democracy in 1996.
